FO Friday: Advent Garland Set

Hello, my blog! It’s been a long time since we had a chance to talk.  What have I been up to for the last month or so?  Funny you should ask …

I decided to join a really fun KAL! Designer Frankie Brown released a new pattern for a tiny knit ornament every day of the Advent — how could I resist??  My Advent Garland Set is a joy to behold and was a great way to wait for Christmas.  It did suck up almost all my knitting (and blogging, as it turned out) time this month though.  I used my stash of Knit Picks Palette yarn, and knit all the ornaments on US#1.5 needles.

Cast-On Monday: Kensington Mitts, Bubble Hat, Advent Garland, and Jellyfish Bodega

I’ve cast on a number of new projects over the last two weeks.  The first pattern is from the new “Jane Austen Knits” special-edition magazine from Interweave Press.  I’m making the Kensington Mitts with a skein of tonal green Dream in Color Smooshy.

I also cast on (and finished) this adorable Bubble Hat using some Swish Tonal left-over from my Marilla Shawl. Meg, if you’re reading this — this hat is for Susan, of course!

Have I mentioned that I recently started working at the Hub Mills Store, now in Billerica, MA?  In addition to the retail work, I’ll also be teaching knitting there.  And, making samples for the shop!  While we were setting up the yarn in the new shop, a shipment of new yarn came in, with packs of an unusual fiber called Bodega. I took some home to make a sample for the store — it is very, very interesting!   Below, you can see my first attempt at a Bodega scarf, using the pattern that came with the yarn.  I wanted something fuller, so I started over yesterday … just wait until you see the jellyfish awesomeness of the new version.

Last but definitely not least, I cast on for the Advent Garland that Frankie Brown is offering for Christmas 2011.  Every day of December until Christmas, Frankie is releasing a new tiny ornament pattern, and a bunch of my knitter friends are all doing the ornaments together.

Ravelry Monday: Comfort Slippers for Japan, Holes, and Knit Purl Knitting Bag

First Pick: Comfort Slippers for Japan, by Reiko Arato ($2.50)

A sweet little pair of house slippers, using only 50 g of sock yarn — and the designer is donating the proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross.  Here is her message:

I was born and grow up in Sendai, Japan, and have lived in Shanghai, China since last year. My parents live in Sendai. Many friends also live there. For my hometown and Japan which had suffered serious tsunami damage, I had thought what I was able to do from Shanghai. Then, I decided to sell my pattern and to contribute the total amounts I received for Japan to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

I don’t usually buy patterns until I’m ready to start knitting, but in this case I made an exception.

 

Second Pick: Knit Purl Knitting Project Bag, by Nicole Montgomery ($4.99 at TrappingsandTrinkets)

I’m not much of a “bag” person usually, but I really like this one. Simple, stylish, plus a sheep! Who could ask for more.

Third Pick: Holes, by Frankie Brown (FREE! (donation to Children’s Liver Foundation suggested)

The latest pattern from Frankie Brown just plain makes me happy. I love the creative use of garter-stitch short rows to make square donuts that button together. Clever!
