CO Monday: Your Way Cowl

I’m working on a new design project … something in Danu, a one-skein cowl.  Kate’s brilliant idea was to make it so the knitter could knit it flat OR in the round — hence, “Your Way Cowl.”

I’m using my skein of Squonk from the Bestiary Yarn Club.

I tried out a couple stitch patterns … it’s always a challenge to find something interesting that doesn’t start a pitched battle with the colorway, when using highly variegated yarns like this one.  I think I’ve found the right one … but who knows, later tonight I may rip it all out! 😉

CO Monday: DIC Wisp design project

Hooray! My design submission to Dream In Color was accepted.  I’m making a lace shawl: crescent-shaped, bottom up, with optional nupps — in two sizes no less! DIC’s new Wisp is super pretty — according to the Ravelry page for Wisp, they released this yarn in a different put-up as part of the 2012 yarn club. I for one am glad to have it become part of their line.  The hand-painted colors just glow on the merino-silk blend.

My design will be in the “Brilliant” colorway:

This isn’t Wisp, of course — some other base.  But I will show you WIP photos to prove it’s just as pretty on the lace-weight Wisp!

Once the pattern is complete and fully tested and tech edited, I’ll be hosting a knit-along on my Ravelry group.  It won’t be a mystery this time — you’ll know what you’re getting into! — but I will provide support, cheerleading, and prizes to help motivate you.  The full size of the design will use two skeins of Wisp, but the pattern will also provide directions for a scaled-down version that only needs one skein.

CO Monday: Sublimity Cowl

I have been trying VERY HARD to finish projects and not start any new ones.  I submitted an application to the Fiber Factor, and I know if I win the knitting lottery and make it to the semi-finals, I’ll be very busy knitting for the next few months, and I won’t have time for a bunch of random projects for me.

BUT — I saw Sivia Harding’s new cowl pattern (Sublimity) on Ravelry, and had to make it. Now.

So, I bought a second skein of Tosh Vintage in Rosewood, ran to the bead store (that I had been at the day before, silly), and cast on. I love it.

CO Monday: Sunsuit for Gwen

A friend of mine from agility just had a baby girl … I kept meaning to make something for the baby, the whole time she was pregnant.  Whoops! Instead, I cast on for a “Susan’s Sunsuit” in size 6 months — it’s a quick knit, and should be done it plenty of time for warm weather.  The pattern is my own — to be published in the upcoming “Fresh Designs: Kids” book from Cooperative Press.  Here’s a blue version that I made for a different baby girl :).

Cast-on Monday: Mezair Prototype (AATG #3), Circlet for S.

I asked my friend’s daughter (who is three) if she would like a knitted crown.  Via facebook, naturally.

Me: S, would you like a crown? If so, please tell me what color(s) you like, and how big around your head is.

S. (with help from her mom): S. says, yes, pink, and 19.5 inches. (She acknowledges that she could accept purple maybe if you don’t have any pink yarn handy.) Thanks!

So, I am making a Very Pink Circlet.  It’s a quick knit, very satisfying — great design.

In other news, I have designed and cast on for the third shawlette in the Airs Above the Ground series.  This one is very, very pretty so far! Beads make everything better, don’t you think?

CO Monday: Knitters Gone Wild

I bought new yarn on Sunday, and started making stuff right away!

With my skein of A Hundred Raves Danu in “Briar Rose,” I’m making a Trestle Cowl (changed to working in the round, rather than flat):

With my skein of A Hundred Raves Danu in “Maple,” I’m making a Greyhaven cowl — but fewer repeats and taller (for warmth).

I also cast on for pair of socks 2 of 5 for my mom — purple Alpaca Sox in the Gush pattern:

CO Monday: AATG #2

This week I cast on for the second shawl in the “Airs Above The Ground” series.  This one is a half-circle with a notch for the neck, like Broken. I’m using the Styx skein from A Hundred Ravens:

The skein is dip-dyed in bright pink and a rich purpley black, so naturally it will pool and flash and stripe as the stitch count varies.  This is always a concern with using hand-dyed yarn that has a strong color difference … but in this case the pattern is working up well.  I’m using a simple and bold lace pattern, so that it doesn’t fight with the yarn — so far so good!

Cast-on Monday: Shrug

I finaly finished my green sweater last week.  It seems like sweaters for me always slip to the bottom of my knitting priority list. I cast on for this particular sweater in Jan 2012…. Just sayin’.  So, this week, I chose one of the six sweaters that I already have yarn for. I settled on a cotton shrug in worsted weight yarn — shoukd be a quick knit :.

CO Monday: design projects aplenty, plus some cabled mitts

A couple weeks ago, Classic Elite’s Web-letter featured the Fresco Garter Cabled Wristlets. Check out the awesome sample mitts:

I bought some Fresco in Plum (5332) — lovely warm purple — and cast on:

Yes, those are Signature needles. I have a #3 set and a #8 set — both 32″.

I’ve also planned the shawls for my next collection. Like Lovelorn, each of the shawls in Airs Above the Ground will use a single skein (or equivalent) of fingering-weight yarn.  I’ve cast on for the first pattern, which uses Footlights, which is a bit unusual.  Rather than a single 100-gram skein, it is sold in bundles of four 25-gram skeins in coordinating colors, along with a special striped-sock pattern. Of course, I’m not making socks with mine … but I am taking advantage of this special put-up in the first shawl.

As if this weren’t already enough, I’ve also cast on for a very special design project — for an upcoming “What Would Madame DeFarge Knit?” book. I’m so excited to be part of this awesome series.  I have some great yarn in a fabulous color, and it’s knitting up (dare I say) perfectly … I couldn’t be happier.  I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to share, or when, so for now I’m staying mum.
